Peninsula Foods | Quilcene WA

Peter Kun Frary | Photographer

I spent my early childhood years on a small farm in Quilcene and, after moving to Port Townsend for grade school, visited my grandparents in Quilcene on weekends. Quilcene held a lot of memories and Peninsula Foods was a regular stop with my grandfather. Today it's more New Age than the country store I remembered. One oddity is customers and employees openly stared at my wife and I when we dropped in for coffee. We smiled and greeted them and they continued staring—not a word was spoken. Perhaps they were stoned, never seen an Asian before or they stare at all tourists, but, just like that, the romantic notions of my childhood home dissipated into the mists of the Olympics.
